Edward Bernays, Sigmund Freud's nephew, considered one of the fathers of the field of public relations, combining the ideas of Gustave Le Bon and Wilfred Trotter on crowd psychology with the psychoanalytical ideas of his uncle, was pretty much the first to use this field of study to manipulate public opinion via. the subconscious at the turn of the 20th century.
